My passion around diet and lifestyle medicine began with my own health battle with irritable bowel syndrome, diagnosed in my 20s. Being given a diagnosis of IBS unfortunately provided no more clues as to why I felt the way I did.
IBS is an umbrella term, which covers many different disorders of the digestive system. Finding the root cause and triggers to my IBS was essential in directing me on how to use diet and lifestyle choices to reduce symptoms and prevent future outbreaks. Learning about the close relationship between the gut and nervous system opened my eyes to an understanding of why my mood was affected by my tummy and my tummy was affected by my mood! This revelation inspired me to embrace my health and led me to become passionate about helping others with similar conditions.
Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, believed that all disease began in the gut and in many ways this may be true. Imbalances in the body often arise or are triggered by changes that happen within the digestive system, so supporting our bodies with good nutrition, coupled with ways to improve mental, emotional and nervous system health are the foundations to a healthy lifespan.
I successfully completed 3 years of training as a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist, qualifying with distinction from the renowned College of Naturopathic Medicine in London. During this course, I was trained to focus on the principles of functional medicine which identify and address root causes of ill health, focusing on genetics, environment, diet and lifestyle.
I also completed 2 years training as a Therapeutic Coach through the Optimum Health Clinic in London, which integrates Life Coaching, Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), Hypnotherapy and EFT Tapping. Coaching plays a crucial role in supporting individuals to achieve their health and wellness goals. The emphasis is placed on facilitating behavioural change by providing guidance, accountability and encouragement, to help clients adopt and maintain healthy habits and lifestyle modifications. The approach focuses on the unique resources inherent in each individual, empowering them to champion their uniqueness through self-awareness, self-compassion and alignment with their true values and purpose.
I encourage individuals to explore Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT Tapping) if I sense emotions are contributing to their ill health. As a certified and accredited EFT Practitioner, I incorporate this method into my nutritional programmes where possible, to foster a deeper connection between mind and body. This reinforces the holistic approach that encompasses emotional, mental and physical well-being.
