Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a mind and body therapeutic approach to reduce overwhelm, anxiety and stress. It is an easy method to learn, non-invasive to do and quick to use. Whilst initially you may choose to learn the process with a practitioner, once mastered, you have the tool to use at leisure for life.
The method involves lightly tapping on specific acupuncture points on the face and upper body, while concentrating on an emotional concern or physical discomfort. Tapping on these points sends calming signals to the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for detecting threats and triggering the stress response (fight-or-flight). Studies show that EFT can reduce cortisol (our stress hormone), shifting the body from the sympathetic state to a more relaxed parasympathetic state, thereby regulating the autonomic nervous system.
By engaging both mind and body, the person is able to tap into feelings, emotions and sensory information stored in the body. By using the tapping to calm down the nervous system, space is created to stand back from difficult or uncomfortable emotions and thoughts. This opens up opportunities to reflect and reframe, providing choice to change negative feelings and self-limiting thoughts, as well as encourage new and healthier thought patterns and emotional states.
EFT can be used on a wide range of issues, whether emotional, mental or physical. There are now over 100 published studies demonstrating efficacy with EFT treatment used on psychological conditions such as anxiety, depression, phobias, PTSD as well as physiological issues such as pain, insomnia, autoimmune conditions and biological markers of stress.
Recent research on gene expression suggests that EFT not only has the ability to down regulate genes related to the stress response, but also regulate or improve the way our immune system functions. EFT may act as a facilitator in aligning our physical, mental and emotional states towards healing, thus enabling processes of repair, recovery and restoration.
From a nutritional perspective, EFT can serve as an effective ally by facilitating the body's transition into a healing state, whilst simultaneously alleviating resistance, self-doubt and frustration towards illness and bodily symptoms.
